Make A Difference This Volunteers Week

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. Here are just some of the charities and social enterprises where your skills, be they in cooking, organising, hosting or fundraising, could be of service.

Migrateful

What they do: Migrateful runs cookery classes by refugees, asylum seekers and migrants struggling to integrate and access employment.

What they need: Chef training, class sidekicks, and longer terms support roles. Also volunteers to run ad-hoc, one-off classes in London, Brighton and Kent.

The Felix Project

What they do: The Felix Project is a London-based food redistribution charity set up to fight food waste and hunger.

What they need: There’s a range of tasks you can get involved with including sorting food, admin work, cooking in the kitchen and driving vans.

City Harvest

What they do: City Harvest is a food redistribution charity, helping to put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distribution to organisations around London that feed the hungry.

What they need: The two typical roles they offer at their hubs in Acton (W3) and Spitalfields Market (E1) are as warehouse assistant (packing, checking, sorting food) or driver’s assistant (collecting and delivering surplus food across London).

Food Behind Bars

What they do: The UK’s only registered charity dedicated to transforming the food served in British prisons. Food Behind Bars works with prisons to improve the lives of those eating it and support the people making it.

What they need: Opportunities are posted on Instagram @foodbehindbars.Those who have a specific skill to offer eg. marketing, fundraising or cooking are encouraged to contact the charity direct.

Mike’s Table

What they do: Mike’s Table runs supper clubs in venues across London. Ticket sales fund supper clubs for invited non-paying guests referred by charity partners – the same venue, the same menu and the same warm welcome.

What they need: Whether you’re a chef, a waiter, or happy to wash up; whether you’re a photographer, a waiter, an artist, a comedian, a singer, or simply want to volunteer, Mike’s Table would love to hear from you.

Food Cycle

What they do? A UK-wide charity that utilises surplus food and spare kitchen spaces to provide meals for people at risk of food poverty and social isolation.

What they need? ‘Check-in and chat’ remote volunteers; food collection, cooking, and hosting volunteers.
