Oven baked croutons

Make crispy, golden croutons tossed in garlic and olive oil, perfect for topping soups.

Ingredients

For the croutons:

  • 2 slices stale white bread
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Setup

  • Preheat oven to 190°C
Preparing croutons

Method

  1. Remove the crusts from the bread and cut into 1cm cubes
  2. Crush the garlic to a smooth paste with a little salt
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the crushed garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper
  4. Add the cubes of bread and toss well
  5. Spread the croutons out onto a baking tray and bake in the oven until beginning to turn brown. Turnover and continue to cook until evenly brown
  6. Once the croutons are golden and crispy all over, place on kitchen paper to drain thoroughly
  7. Scatter over soup.

  • Evenly brown
  • Golden and crispy
