Designed for graduates who want to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as a specialist food and nutrition teacher. QTS is a requirement for teachers in all State schools and is good practice in Multi Academy Trust (MAT) and the Independent sector.
In addition to hands on immersive teaching and learning practice at placements schools, and specialist teaching and learning tuition provided by the University of Roehampton, students will also attend ten food teaching subject specialist skills days delivered jointly by UoR and Leiths Education at a school location located near their placement school.
This qualification also requires students to engage in an Online 30 recipe cookery course their own time. Designed and delivered by Leiths Education specialist teachers, this unique digital course will enable students to master the practical skills required to deliver food courses and qualifications with confidence, whilst cooking and enjoying a range of delicious recipes.
Each day will comprise a morning ‘theory session’ delivered by UoR and an afternoon hands on ‘practical skills session’ delivered by Leiths. All ingredients, supporting teaching and learning notes provided.
Session 1
The history and development of Food Teaching and the current curriculum; the art of demonstration and an introduction to the Food Teacher Centre.
Session 2
Designing and implementing an engaging food curriculum and cross curricular teaching through food.
Session 3
Setting up and managing a food department and how to build a cost-effective scheme of work.
Session 4
Setting up and managing a practical food room and practical food lessons .
Session 5
Managing Health and Safety and food safety in practical food lessons.
Session 6
Delivering practical food lessons and incorporating food science effectively.
Session 7
Food and nutrition subject knowledge and the importance of presentation and plating in practical food lessons.
Session 8
Progression, differentiation and assessment, including the importance of food photography, annotation and effective evaluation.
Session 9
Managing, marking and moderating and marking of practical assessments including GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition non-exam assessments (NEA’S) and other vocational qualifications.
Session 10
Preparing and delivering a practical interview task at a food teaching job interview.

The five locations are;
Roehampton will allocate you a placement school in this area, and you will attend ten subject specialist food practical days (once a month September to June) at one of our Leiths Partner schools in the area, or at Leiths School of Food and Wine if you join the London location.
