Why the Leiths Primary Cookery Curriculum

Classroom-Ready, Chef-Led Learning

Chef-led cook-along videos and comprehensive classroom resources support teachers to deliver structured, high-quality cookery lessons aligned to Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 curriculum objectives.

Proven, Practical and Inclusive

Successfully piloted in primary schools, the curriculum provides mapped skills progression, practical food education and inclusive classroom delivery across a wide range of learning needs.

Building Skills for Life

Pupils explore cooking through seasonality, food provenance and cross-curricular learning, helping pupils build practical skills, confidence and food understanding through structured, hands-on sessions.

Course Overview

Leiths’ Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 course provides everything needed to deliver engaging, hands-on cookery lessons that build skills, confidence and a lasting interest in food. With a wide range of recipes designed primarily for no-heat cookery, plus safe heat options in Key Stage 2, pupils learn about food provenance, safe preparation and how to create nutritious dishes to share at home.

Example dishes include pea, basil and tomato bruschetta, Greek salad pittas, vegetable laksa and lime cheesecake pots.

Course Details

Leiths knows that most primary schools don’t have dedicated food technology facilities and need a simple approach to practical cookery that works in a classroom or ‘pop-up’ kitchen in a school hall. Designed for stress-free practical cookery, Leiths recipes use simple everyday equipment and fresh affordable ingredients.

Each practical session is taught by Chef AJ in a professional step-by-step video for children to follow as they cook. Chef AJ explains what to do in each step and inspires students to try new ingredients and flavours in every session.

Most recipes are heat-free, but some use a plug-in induction hob or an oven to explore safe ways to cook with heat. Each practical session is designed to take up to 50 minutes and includes ingredients and equipment set-up notes. Recipes cost less than £1 per student and are designed for sharing with family and friends.

Timetabling

We know every school is different, so our schemes of work have been designed with flexibility in mind. With 15 classroom lessons and accompanying recipes for Key Stage 1 and 17 for Key Stage 2, teachers can choose to embed the whole scheme of work into their primary curriculum, or pick and choose individual sessions for immersive activity days.

How we help

We know that not every teacher is a confident cook themselves, so we ensure that you have everything you need from lesson plans and recipes to teacher notes and Chef AJ’s videos to cook along with. Lesson resources, with worksheets and supporting slide decks, are all easily accessible through our online Education Portal.

What you need to know

The only thing we don’t include are the ingredients and some simple everyday equipment you will need. We have designed all lessons to be delivered in a ‘pop-up’ kitchen in your classroom or school hall so that you can take these lessons anywhere.

Extra-curricular opportunities

As well as being used in lessons, our resources are perfect for use in after-school clubs, enrichment time, and family sessions to include parents too. Cooking together is a wonderful way to bring your school community together – we are sure a staff meeting making yummy food and eating together would be welcomed too!

Certification

An end of course certificate template enables each pupil to receive a personalised Leiths certificate at the end of their cookery day or course.
