Free webinar – Monday 9 March 2026, 7:00-8:00pm. Practical cookery from KS1–KS5: discover new Leiths courses, pricing, and how to bring exciting skills and delicious recipe-led learning into your school.
Ask the children what the UK recommended average amount of calories per day is for an adult male and an adult female. (If covered already, remind them that they learnt this from the ‘Eatwell Guide’/key nutrients lessons). Reveal the answers on the PowerPoint and then use the PowerPoint from here. The amount of time/explanation you will need for the ‘Eatwell Guide’ will depend upon whether or not you have covered this already.
NOTE: There is a separate lesson on date marks and storage instructions.
Play ‘Red, Amber, Green’. Allocate a red, amber and green area in the classroom (or outside). Tell children that you have packaging from a selection of pre-packed foods that use the traffic light system. They are going to think about whether the fat/saturate/sugar/salt content of each of the foods is high, medium or low and then go to the area with the corresponding colour. Tell them you are not going to show them the labels until after they have gone to what they think is the correct area. For example, tell them you have the label from a packet of breakfast cereal. Do they think the sugar ‘light’ will be red, amber or green? Repeat as many times as you wish, allowing time for discussion and reaction when you show the label for each food. If you don’t have enough room inside for children to move around, consider giving them a piece of red, amber and green paper or card to hold up or come up with a gesture for each colour.
Use complementary pupil sheet if required.
Discuss children’s work on their pupil sheets if used. Ask questions to reinforce key concepts and vocabulary. For example:
Art – Create images using red, amber and green – could use Rothko’s ‘Green Red on Orange’ as inspiration
English – Explore the difference between a label and a caption
Geography – Locate and label places/features for class topic
Maths – Percentages: base investigation on ‘traffic light’ labelling
Maths – Interpret and construct pie charts and use these to solve problems
Music – What colours do the children associate with different music?
Science – Record findings using labelled diagrams
Play the ‘Red, Amber, Green’ game outside
