Free webinar – Monday 9 March 2026, 7:00-8:00pm. Practical cookery from KS1–KS5: discover new Leiths courses, pricing, and how to bring exciting skills and delicious recipe-led learning into your school.
Using the link on the PowerPoint or your own, play the sounds of compost without telling children what it is. Can they guess?
Ask children if they have any experience of composting, then use the PDF Presentation.
In pairs or individually, children to write an acrostic poem to help people know what is compostable. They should use their choice of the initial letters from: ‘Compost’; ‘Compost Bin/s’; ‘Compost Heap/s’. Children can either simply list fruit and vegetables that begin with the letter at the beginning of each line or try a more complex poem as per example on the PDF Presentation.
Use complementary pupil sheet.
Share examples of children’s poems. Ask questions to reinforce key concepts and vocabulary. For example:
Art – Still life of compost ‘ingredients’ e.g. apple, carrot, etc
English – Perform the acrostic compost poems
Maths – Mass – relate to compost
Music – Create ‘compost’ sounds
Science – Research and discuss how chemical changes have an impact on our lives – composting
Visit a composting area e.g. in school, at an allotment.
