Skill Focus

Competence cornerstone

Display images of babies, children, adults, etc to explore the different stages of life. Then show, for example, a baby’s bottle of milk and ask children who would consume this. Continue with other examples to suit different life stages, exploring reasons why e.g. teeth, growing needs, etc. Point out that a balanced diet is always important whatever your age. You could refer to ‘Goldilocks’ for younger children to reinforce the concept of portion sizes that are ‘just right’.

Using PowerPoint, pose the ‘True or False?’ to children. Encourage them to try to explain their point of view. The statement is false (the recommendation for 15-18-year-old males is 2,500 calories a day and 2,000 for females. For males over 75, it is 2,294 calories and for females, 1,840). You may wish to explore what happens if we consume too much or too little – for example, by asking the children if they think it’s a good idea to consume the recommended amount of calories. Why or why not?

Suggested activity

Explain pupil sheet to children.
