What is a dietitian?

Dietitians are healthcare professionals who specialise in the science of nutrition, providing expert advice on food and diet to help manage health conditions and promote overall well-being. They assess individual dietary needs, create personalised nutrition plans, and work with clients to help manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or allergies.

Dietitians work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, and private practices. They collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure their patients receive comprehensive care that supports both medical treatment and nutritional health.

In addition to offering one-on-one consultations, Dietitians often educate the public about healthy eating habits, portion control, and disease prevention. They use their knowledge of food science, biochemistry, and physiology to guide clients towards making informed, sustainable dietary choices.

Dieticians often work full-time hours, throughout the week, working around 35-45 hours per week. Those who are self-employed may find they need to flex their working hours to their clients’ preferences, which for some can entail evening and weekend work.
